UK Regulator to Allow Retail Investors Access to Crypto ETNs in October
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will permit U.K. retail investors to purchase crypto exchange-traded notes (cETNs) starting October 8, reversing a 2021 ban. The regulator cited improved market maturity and clearer product structures as key factors in its decision.
Approved cETNs must list on FCA-recognized U.K. exchanges and comply with strict financial promotion rules. Consumer Duty protections will apply, though investors won't benefit from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
This policy shift follows explosive growth in U.S. crypto ETFs, which now hold $146.4 billion in assets according to SoSoValue data. The MOVE signals growing institutional acceptance of regulated crypto investment vehicles.
